1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
 Εν [in] αρχῆ [beginning] ῆν [was] ο [the] λόγος [word],, καὶ [and] ο [the] λόγος [word] ῆν [was] πρὸς [with] τὸν [the] θεόν [God],, καὶ [and] θεὸς [God] ῆν [was] ο [the] λόγος [word]..
2 He was in the beginning with God.
 οῦτος [this] ῆν [was] εν [in] αρχῆ [beginning] πρὸς [with] τὸν [the] θεόν [God]..
3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.
 πάντα [all] δι᾿ [through] αυτοῦ [him] εγένετο [became],, καὶ [and] χωρὶς [without] αυτοῦ [him] εγένετο [became] ουδὲ [not] έν [one].. ὸ [which] γέγονεν [become]
4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.
 εν [in] αυτῶ [him] ζωὴ [life] ῆν [was],, καὶ [and] η [the] ζωὴ [life] ῆν [was] τὸ [the] φῶς [light] τῶν [the] ανθρώπων [men]·;
5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
 καὶ [and] τὸ [the] φῶς [light] εν [in] τῆ [the] σκοτία [darkness] φαίνει [shines],, καὶ [and] η [the] σκοτία [darkness] αυτὸ [it] ου [not] κατέλαβεν [overcame]..
6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
 Εγένετο [was] άνθρωπος [man] απεσταλμένος [sent] παρὰ [from] θεοῦ [God],, όνομα [name] αυτῶ [him] Ιωάννης [John]·;
7 This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe.
 οῦτος [this] ῆλθεν [came] εις [for] μαρτυρίαν [testimony],, ίνα [that] μαρτυρήση [testify] περὶ [concerning] τοῦ [the] φωτός [light],, ίνα [that] πάντες [all] πιστεύσωσιν [might believe] δι᾿ [through] αυτοῦ [him]..
8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
 ουκ [not] ῆν [was] εκεῖνος [he] τὸ [the] φῶς [light],, αλλ᾿ [but] ίνα [that] μαρτυρήση [testify] περὶ [concerning] τοῦ [the] φωτός [light]..
9 That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.
 Η͂ν [was] τὸ [the] φῶς [light] τὸ [the] αληθινόν [true],, ὸ [which] φωτίζει [enlightens] πάντα [every] άνθρωπον [man],, ερχόμενον [coming] εις [into] τὸν [the] κόσμον [world]..
10 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.
 εν [in] τῶ [the] κόσμω [world] ῆν [was],, καὶ [and] ο [the] κόσμος [world] δι᾿ [through] αυτοῦ [Him] εγένετο [made],, καὶ [and] ο [the] κόσμος [world] αυτὸν [Him] ουκ [not] έγνω [recognize]..
11 He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.
 εις [to] τὰ [the] ίδια [his own] ῆλθεν [came],, καὶ [and] οι [the] ίδιοι [his own] αυτὸν [Him] ου [not] παρέλαβον [received]..
12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:
 όσοι [as many as] δὲ [but] έλαβον [received] αυτόν [Him],, έδωκεν [gave] αυτοῖς [to them] εξουσίαν [capacity] τέκνα [children] θεοῦ [of God] γενέσθαι [to become],, τοῖς [to those] πιστεύουσιν [who believe] εις [in] τὸ [the] όνομα [name] αυτοῦ [His],,
13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
 οὶ [who] ουκ [not] εξ [of] αιμάτων [blood] ουδὲ [nor] εκ [of] θελήματος [will] σαρκὸς [flesh] ουδὲ [nor] εκ [of] θελήματος [will] ανδρὸς [man] αλλ᾿ [but] εκ [of] θεοῦ [God] εγεννήθησαν [were born]..
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
 Καὶ [and] ο [the] λόγος [Word] σὰρξ [flesh] εγένετο [became] καὶ [and] εσκήνωσεν [dwelt] εν [among] ημῖν [us],, καὶ [and] εθεασάμεθα [beheld] τὴν [the] δόξαν [glory] αυτοῦ [His],, δόξαν [glory] ως [as] μονογενοῦς [only begotten] παρὰ [from] πατρός [Father],, πλήρης [full] χάριτος [grace] καὶ [and] αληθείας [truth]..
15 John bore witness of Him and cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me.’ ”
 Ιωάννης [John] μαρτυρεῖ [testifies] περὶ [concerning] αυτοῦ [Him] καὶ [and] κέκραγεν [cried] λέγων [saying],, Οῦτος [this] ῆν [was] ὸν [whom] εῖπον [I said],, Ο [The] οπίσω [after] μου [me] ερχόμενος [coming] έμπροσθέν [before] μου [me] γέγονεν [has become],, ότι [for] πρῶτός [first] μου [me] ῆν [was]..
16 And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace.
 ότι [for] εκ [of] τοῦ [the] πληρώματος [fullness] αυτοῦ [His] ημεῖς [we] πάντες [all] ελάβομεν [received],, καὶ [and] χάριν [grace] αντὶ [upon] χάριτος [grace]·;
17 For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
 ότι [for] ο [the] νόμος [law] διὰ [through] Μωυσέως [Moses] εδόθη [was given],, η [the] χάρις [grace] καὶ [and] η [the] αλήθεια [truth] διὰ [through] Ιησοῦ [Jesus] Χριστοῦ [Christ] εγένετο [came]..
18 No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.
 θεὸν [God] ουδεὶς [no one] εώρακεν [seen] πώποτε [at any time]·; μονογενὴς [only begotten] θεὸς [God] ο [who] ὼν [being] εις [in] τὸν [the] κόλπον [bosom] τοῦ [the] πατρὸς [Father] εκεῖνος [He] εξηγήσατο [declared]..
19 Now this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”
 Καὶ [And] αύτη [this] εστὶν [is] η [the] μαρτυρία [testimony] τοῦ [of] Ιωάννου [John],, ότε [when] απέστειλαν [sent][[ πρὸς [to] αυτὸν [him]]] οι [the] Ιουδαῖοι [Jews] εξ [from] Ιεροσολύμων [Jerusalem] ιερεῖς [priests] καὶ [and] Λευίτας [Levites] ίνα [to] ερωτήσωσιν [ask] αυτόν [him],, Σὺ [you] τίς [who] εῖ [are];?
20 He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.”
καὶ-ωμολόγησεν-καὶ-ουκ-ηρνήσατο-,-καὶ-ωμολόγησεν-ότι-Εγὼ-ουκ-ειμὶ-ο-Χριστός-.-
21 And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.”
 καὶ [and] ηρώτησαν [asked] αυτόν [him],, Τί [what] οῦν [then] σύ [you];? Ηλίας [Elijah] εῖ [are];? καὶ [and] λέγει [said],, Ουκ [no] ειμί [am].. Ο [the] προφήτης [prophet] εῖ [are] σύ [you];? καὶ [and] απεκρίθη [answered],, Ού [no]..
22 Then they said to him, “Who are you, that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?”
 εῖπαν [said] οῦν [then] αυτῶ [to him],, Τίς [who] εῖ [are];? ίνα [that] απόκρισιν [answer] δῶμεν [give] τοῖς [those] πέμψασιν [sent] ημᾶς [us]·; τί [what] λέγεις [say] περὶ [about] σεαυτοῦ [yourself];?
23 He said: “I am ‘The voice of one crying in the wilderness: “Make straight the way of the LORD,” ’ as the prophet Isaiah said.”
 έφη [said],, Εγὼ [I] φωνὴ [voice] βοῶντος [crying] εν [in] τῆ [the] ερήμω [wilderness],, Ευθύνατε [make straight] τὴν [the] οδὸν [way] κυρίου [of the Lord],, καθὼς [as] εῖπεν [said] Ησαίας [Isaiah] ο [the] προφήτης [prophet]..
24 Now those who were sent were from the Pharisees.
 Καὶ [and] απεσταλμένοι [who were sent] ῆσαν [were] εκ [from] τῶν [the] Φαρισαίων [Pharisees]..
25 And they asked him, saying, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”
 καὶ [and] ηρώτησαν [asked] αυτὸν [him] καὶ [and] εῖπαν [said] αυτῶ [to him],, Τί [why] οῦν [then] βαπτίζεις [do baptize] ει [if] σὺ [you] ουκ [not] εῖ [are] ο [the] Χριστὸς [Christ] ουδὲ [nor] Ηλίας [Elijah] ουδὲ [nor] ο [the] προφήτης [prophet];?
26 John answered them, saying, “I baptize with water, but there stands One among you whom you do not know.
 απεκρίθη [answered] αυτοῖς [them] ο [the] Ιωάννης [John] λέγων [saying],, Εγὼ [I] βαπτίζω [baptize] εν [with] ύδατι [water]·; μέσος [among] υμῶν [you] έστηκεν [stands] ὸν [whom] υμεῖς [you] ουκ [not] οίδατε [know],,
27 It is He who, coming after me, is preferred before me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose.”
 ο [-] οπίσω [behind] μου [me] ερχόμενος [coming],, οῦ [whom] ουκ [not] ειμὶ [am][[ εγὼ [I]]] άξιος [worthy] ίνα [that] λύσω [to untie] αυτοῦ [his] τὸν [-] ιμάντα [strap] τοῦ [-] υποδήματος [sandal]..
28 These things were done in Bethabara beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
 Ταῦτα [these things] εν [in] Βηθανία [Bethany] εγένετο [happened] πέραν [beyond] τοῦ [-] Ιορδάνου [Jordan],, όπου [where] ῆν [was] ο [-] Ιωάννης [John] βαπτίζων [baptizing]..
29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
 Τῆ [-] επαύριον [the next day] βλέπει [sees] τὸν [-] Ιησοῦν [Jesus] ερχόμενον [coming] πρὸς [to] αυτόν [him],, καὶ [and] λέγει [says],, Ίδε [behold] ο [-] αμνὸς [Lamb] τοῦ [-] θεοῦ [of God] ο [-] αίρων [who takes away] τὴν [-] αμαρτίαν [sin] τοῦ [-] κόσμου [of the world]..
30 This is He of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who is preferred before me, for He was before me.’
 οῦτός [this] εστιν [is] υπὲρ [for] οῦ [whom] εγὼ [I] εῖπον [said],, Οπίσω [after] μου [me] έρχεται [comes] ανὴρ [man] ὸς [who] έμπροσθέν [before] μου [me] γέγονεν [has become],, ότι [because] πρῶτός [first] μου [me] ῆν [was]..
31 I did not know Him; but that He should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water.”
 καγὼ [and I] ουκ [not] ήδειν [knew] αυτόν [him],, αλλ᾿ [but] ίνα [that] φανερωθῆ [might be revealed] τῶ [-] Ισραὴλ [to Israel] διὰ [for] τοῦτο [this] ῆλθον [came] εγὼ [I] εν [in] ύδατι [water] βαπτίζων [baptizing]..
32 And John bore witness, saying, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him.
 Καὶ [and] εμαρτύρησεν [bore witness] Ιωάννης [John] λέγων [saying] ότι [that] Τεθέαμαι [have seen] τὸ [-] πνεῦμα [Spirit] καταβαῖνον [descending] ως [like] περιστερὰν [a dove] εξ [from] ουρανοῦ [heaven],, καὶ [and] έμεινεν [remained] επ᾿ [upon] αυτόν [him]·;
33 I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’
 καγὼ [and I] ουκ [not] ήδειν [knew] αυτόν [him],, αλλ᾿ [but] ο [the] πέμψας [who sent] με [me] βαπτίζειν [to baptize] εν [in] ύδατι [water] εκεῖνός [that] μοι [to me] εῖπεν [said],, Εφ᾿ [upon] ὸν [whom] ὰν [-] ίδης [you see] τὸ [the] πνεῦμα [Spirit] καταβαῖνον [descending] καὶ [and] μένον [remaining] επ᾿ [upon] αυτόν [him],, οῦτός [this] εστιν [is] ο [the] βαπτίζων [who baptizes] εν [in] πνεύματι [Spirit] αγίω [Holy]..
34 And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.”
 καγὼ [and I] εώρακα [have seen],, καὶ [and] μεμαρτύρηκα [have borne witness] ότι [that] οῦτός [this] εστιν [is] ο [the] υιὸς [Son] τοῦ [of the] θεοῦ [God]..
35 Again, the next day, John stood with two of his disciples.
 Τῆ [on] επαύριον [next day] πάλιν [again] ειστήκει [was standing] ο [the] Ιωάννης [John] καὶ [and] εκ [of] τῶν [the] μαθητῶν [disciples] αυτοῦ [his] δύο [two],,
36 And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said, “Behold the Lamb of God!”
 καὶ [and] εμβλέψας [looked] τῶ [at] Ιησοῦ [Jesus] περιπατοῦντι [walking] λέγει [says],, Ίδε [behold] ο [the] αμνὸς [Lamb] τοῦ [of] θεοῦ [God]..
37 The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.
 καὶ [and] ήκουσαν [heard] οι [the] δύο [two] μαθηταὶ [disciples] αυτοῦ [his] λαλοῦντος [speaking] καὶ [and] ηκολούθησαν [followed] τῶ [the] Ιησοῦ [Jesus]..
38 Then Jesus turned, and seeing them following, said to them, “What do you seek?” They said to Him, “Rabbi” (which is to say, when translated, Teacher), “where are You staying?”
 στραφεὶς [having turned] δὲ [and] ο [-] Ιησοῦς [Jesus] καὶ [and] θεασάμενος [seen] αυτοὺς [them] ακολουθοῦντας [following] λέγει [says] αυτοῖς [them],, Τί [what] ζητεῖτε [seek];? οι [-] δὲ [and] εῖπαν [said] αυτῶ [to Him],, Ραββί [Rabbi][[ ὸ [which] λέγεται [is translated] μεθερμηνευόμενον [being interpreted] Διδάσκαλε [teacher]],], ποῦ [where] μένεις [staying];?
39 He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where He was staying, and remained with Him that day (now it was about the tenth hour).
 λέγει [says] αυτοῖς [to them],, Έρχεσθε [come] καὶ [and] όψεσθε [see].. ῆλθαν [they came] οῦν [so] καὶ [and] εῖδαν [saw] ποῦ [where] μένει [stays],, καὶ [and] παρ᾿ [with] αυτῶ [Him] έμειναν [remained] τὴν [the] ημέραν [day] εκείνην [that]·; ώρα [hour] ῆν [was] ως [about] δεκάτη [tenth]..
40 One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.
 Η͂ν [was] Ανδρέας [Andrew] ο [the] αδελφὸς [brother] Σίμωνος [of Simon] Πέτρου [Peter] εῖς [one] εκ [of] τῶν [the] δύο [two] τῶν [the] ακουσάντων [who heard] παρὰ [from] Ιωάννου [John] καὶ [and] ακολουθησάντων [who followed] αυτῶ [him]·;
41 He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated, the Christ).
 ευρίσκει [finds] οῦτος [this] πρῶτον [first] τὸν [the] αδελφὸν [brother] τὸν [the] ίδιον [his own] Σίμωνα [Simon] καὶ [and] λέγει [says] αυτῶ [to him],, Ευρήκαμεν [we have found] τὸν [the] Μεσσίαν [Messiah][[ ό [which] εστιν [is] μεθερμηνευόμενον [is translated] Χριστός [Christ]
42 And he brought him to Jesus. Now when Jesus looked at him, He said, “You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas” (which is translated, A Stone).
 ήγαγεν [brought] αυτὸν [him] πρὸς [to] τὸν [the] Ιησοῦν [Jesus].. εμβλέψας [having looked] αυτῶ [at him] ο [-] Ιησοῦς [Jesus] εῖπεν [said],, Σὺ [you] εῖ [are] Σίμων [Simon] ο [the] υιὸς [son] Ιωάννου [of John]·; σὺ [you] κληθήση [shall be called] Κηφᾶς [Cephas][[ ὸ [which] ερμηνεύεται [is interpreted] Πέτρος [Peter]].].
43 The following day Jesus wanted to go to Galilee, and He found Philip and said to him, “Follow Me.”
 Τῆ [on the] επαύριον [next day] ηθέλησεν [wanted] εξελθεῖν [to go out] εις [into] τὴν [the] Γαλιλαίαν [Galilee],, καὶ [and] ευρίσκει [finds] Φίλιππον [Philip].. καὶ [and] λέγει [says] αυτῶ [to him] ο [-] Ιησοῦς [Jesus],, Ακολούθει [follow] μοι [me]..
44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.
 ῆν [was] δὲ [and] ο [the] Φίλιππος [Philip] απὸ [from] Βηθσαιδά [Bethsaida],, εκ [of] τῆς [the] πόλεως [city] Ανδρέου [Andrew] καὶ [and] Πέτρου [Peter]..
45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
 ευρίσκει [finds] Φίλιππος [Philip] τὸν [the] Ναθαναὴλ [Nathanael] καὶ [and] λέγει [says] αυτῶ [to him],, Ὸν [whom] έγραψεν [wrote] Μωυσῆς [Moses] εν [in] τῶ [the] νόμω [law] καὶ [and] οι [the] προφῆται [prophets] ευρήκαμεν [we have found],, Ιησοῦν [Jesus] υιὸν [son] τοῦ [of] Ιωσὴφ [Joseph] τὸν [the] απὸ [from] Ναζαρέτ [Nazareth]..
46 And Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”
 καὶ [and] εῖπεν [said] αυτῶ [to him] Ναθαναήλ [Nathanael],, Εκ [from] Ναζαρὲτ [Nazareth] δύναταί [can] τι [any] αγαθὸν [good] εῖναι [to be];? λέγει [says] αυτῶ [to him] Φίλιππος [Philip],, Έρχου [come] καὶ [and] ίδε [see]..
47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him, and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!”
 εῖδεν [saw] ο [the] Ιησοῦς [Jesus] τὸν [the] Ναθαναὴλ [Nathanael] ερχόμενον [coming] πρὸς [to] αυτὸν [Him] καὶ [and] λέγει [says] περὶ [about] αυτοῦ [him],, Ίδε [Behold] αληθῶς [truly] Ισραηλίτης [an Israelite] εν [in] ῶ [whom] δόλος [deceit] ουκ [no] έστιν [is]..
48 Nathanael said to Him, “How do You know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”
 λέγει [says] αυτῶ [to Him] Ναθαναήλ [Nathanael],, Πόθεν [how] με [me] γινώσκεις [know];? απεκρίθη [answered] Ιησοῦς [Jesus] καὶ [and] εῖπεν [said] αυτῶ [to him],, Πρὸ [before] τοῦ [the] σε [you] Φίλιππον [Philip] φωνῆσαι [to call] όντα [being] υπὸ [under] τὴν [the] συκῆν [fig tree] εῖδόν [I saw] σε [you]..
49 Nathanael answered and said to Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”
 απεκρίθη [answered] αυτῶ [to Him] Ναθαναήλ [Nathanael],, Ραββί [rabbi],, σὺ [you] εῖ [are] ο [the] υιὸς [Son] τοῦ [of] θεοῦ [God],, σὺ [you] βασιλεὺς [king] εῖ [are] τοῦ [of] Ισραήλ [Israel]..
50 Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.”
