Athenagoras of Athens, 2nd c.

Christian philosopher and apologist (~133-190)

Biography

Athenagoras of Athens (c. 133 – c. 190) was a Christian philosopher and apologist of the 2nd century. Almost nothing is known about his life; according to a later tradition, he was a philosopher who converted to Christianity while reading the Scriptures with the intention of writing against them.

Around 177 he addressed to the emperors Marcus Aurelius and Commodus "A Plea for the Christians", in which he refutes the accusations of atheism, cannibalism and incest brought against Christians and sets out the Christian teaching on the one God and the Holy Trinity. He also wrote the treatise "On the Resurrection of the Dead". His writings are distinguished by a clear philosophical style and a calm, reasoned tone.
