God’s Action Through the Faith and Prayer of Others

The action of divine grace does not always take place through a person’s own faith and own request. There are not a few cases when God acted through the faith of people close to someone, who labor for the one they love and ask (pray) for him.

4 Friends and the Paralytic

Healing and the forgiveness of sins take place through the faith of the friends of a paralyzed man, who labored hard to bring him to Christ:

“When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, ‘Son, your sins are forgiven you’” (Mark. 2:5)

The Centurion and His Servant

The centurion believes and asks, but it is the centurion’s servant who is healed:

“The centurion answered and said, ‘Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed.’ ... When Jesus heard it, He marveled, and said to those who followed, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!’ ... Then Jesus said to the centurion, ‘Go your way; and as you have believed, so let it be done for you.’ And his servant was healed that same hour” (Matt. 8:8,10,13)

A Father and His Demon-Possessed Son

The father believes and asks, but it is the son who is healed of demon possession:

“Teacher, I brought You my son, who has a mute spirit... So He asked his father, ‘How long has this been happening to him?’ And he said, ‘From childhood... But if You can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.’ Jesus said to him, ‘If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.’ Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, ‘Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!’” (Mark. 9:17-27)

A Canaanite Mother and Her Demon-Possessed Daughter

The mother believes and asks, but it is the daughter of the Canaanite woman (a Syro-Phoenician — Mark. 7:26) who is healed of demon possession:

“And behold, a woman of Canaan came from that region and cried out to Him, saying, ‘Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely demon-possessed.’... Then Jesus answered and said to her, ‘O woman, great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire.’ And her daughter was healed from that very hour” (Matt. 15:22-28)

Jairus and His 12-Year-Old Daughter

The father (Jairus) believes and asks, but it is the daughter who is raised and healed:

“there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue. And he fell down at Jesus’ feet and begged Him to come to his house, for he had an only daughter about twelve years of age, and she was dying... ‘Your daughter is dead. Do not trouble the Teacher.’ But when Jesus heard it, He answered him, saying, ‘Do not be afraid; only believe, and she will be made well.’... But He put them all outside, took her by the hand and called, saying, ‘Little girl, arise.’ Then her spirit returned, and she arose immediately” (Luke. 8:41-42,49-55)

A Nobleman Father and His Son

The nobleman believes and asks, but it is his son who is healed:

“And there was a certain nobleman whose son was sick at Capernaum. When he heard that Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and implored Him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death... Jesus said to him, ‘Go your way; your son lives.’ So the man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and he went his way” (John. 4:46-50)

Conclusions

Thus the Savior expected faith from the parents in order to show the divine action toward their children. And through the request and faith of the parents, divine grace acted toward the children.
